Blog More: 5 Ways Watching TV can Help

productivity blogging tips

In last week’s post, I gave 4 tips on how we, as mommy bloggers with busy schedules, can find more time to blog, be productive and work on our business.  A few of you got back to me and said that watching a lot of television cuts into their time to work on their blog and business.   I completely understand the lure of the television and the power it has over us.  Some of my clients really struggle with it.  It has all the shows and movies you want to see at the click of a button.  And with television, FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) is real and there is so much good stuff on every day.  What’s a girl to do?

Now, I rarely turn on the TV during the day, but that was not always the case.  When I was writing my dissertation, I just could not turn off the television.  It was my escape from all the hard work I was doing.

Bad thing was that I was spending so much time watching “The Young and the Restless” and reality TV that I was barely getting any work done on my dissertation.  So much so that my research advisor voiced his concern to me about my lack of progress.  That was a turning point for me and I knew I had to get help or this whole PhD thing wouldn’t turn out so well.

So I enlisted the help of a mentor to get me back on track.  With the help of my mentor, I was able to rein in my TV watching and finish my dissertation.  Yay!  But what I learned about being productive and still watching television applies to anyone trying to complete tasks, get work done or reach goals.  And now, I want to pass those tips on to you so you can use them to be more prolific and profitable on your blog or business.

But before I pass on those tips, do you have a blog yet?  If not, don’t despair.  I am here to help you though the whole process.  In just 5 minutes you can get your blog up and running.  Check out this blog post where I give step-by-step tutorial on how to start a blog.  The instructions are clear and easy to follow.  So get started on your dream today by clicking HERE to start your blog.

About to watch a really good show on Netflix called “Marcella”. Great name for a show, by the way!

Need to blog and work on your business but can’t turn off the TV, here’s a few tips:

PRODUCTIVITY TIP #1: TiVo it!

The greatest invention after the television is TiVo.  If you have to work on your business, TiVo what you really want to see or don’t want to miss on television.  Buy it.  It is worth the investment.

PRODUCTIVITY TIP #2: Be Patient

If you forgot to TiVo it, it will probably come on again.

PRODUCTIVITY TIP #3: Get Netflix, Hulu or Amazon Prime

Or purchase some other streaming service that lets you watch television on demand. So when you have a free hour, watch the show you really want to on demand.

PRODUCTIVITY TIP #4: Watch Your Favorite Shows While You Work Out

I do this religiously.  When I’m doing my cardio, I’m not listening to music.  No way!  I’m watching Netflix.  Depending on how long you work out, t’s a great way to get in anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour of  (guilt-free!) TV watching.

PRODUCTIVITY TIP #5: Work During Commercial Breaks

Here’s a trick I used in graduate school when I really wanted to watch something but had a ton of work to do. Watch it live when it comes on but work only during the commercial breaks.  Or watch it on TiVo but don’t fast forward through the commercial breaks.  This only works for shows and movies that have commercials.  Honestly, I probably write most of my blog posts during commercial breaks.  Try it.  You will be amazed at how much work you get done.

What are some tips that you use to keep your TV watching time in check?  Do you struggle with watching too much television?  Is it affecting your work time?  If so let me know in the comments.  Also, let me know your tips and tricks on how to be more effective at getting work done during the day.

Productivity Tips for Mommy Bloggers

Productivity is key in being a successful mommy blogger.  We are business owners and we are busy.  Very busy.  We have significant others, kids, errands to run, things to do around the house and on top of all that, we must work on our business.  Sometimes it can be really difficult to find the time to be productive and complete business tasks.  Even if you don’t work a 9-5 or work out of your home, it still can be tricky getting those hours in.  What’s a girl to do?

But before I dive deep into my tips, do you have a blog yet?  If not, don’t despair.  I am here to help you though the whole process.  In just 5 minutes you can get your blog up and running.  Check out this blog post where I give step-by-step tutorial on how to start a blog.  The instructions are clear and easy to follow.  So get started on your dream today by clicking HERE to start your blog.

Why is so hard to be productive?  Because your sweetie is calling asking you to do this or that.  You volunteered some time at your kid’s school or you meet a client for lunch at 11 am and the next thing you know, it’s 2 o’clock.

Or you spend a few hours in a mastermind group for business.  All of these activities are valid, but it eats away at your productivity and the actual time that you are working on your business.  Next thing you know, its Friday and you haven’t completed any of the things you said you would for your business.  In order to keep that from happening, here are a few of my suggestions on how to make more time for your business.

PRODUCTIVITY TIP #1: WORK AT LEAST 2 HOURS DAILY

I suggest working at least two hours a day.  And when I say two hours a day, I mean every day – seven days a week!  Try to find two hours early in the morning between 5 am and 9am.  Or try to find some time at night between 8 pm to 12 midnight.  Now, some of you might balk at staying up to midnight on a weeknight, but how late did you stay up to watch the Super Bowl?  How much time do you spend watching Netflix daily?  Personally, I watch one or two hours of television with my husband every night.  So, allocating some of that television time for my business is a good thing.  We make time for the things that are important to us.  So make time in your schedule to work on your business.

PRODUCTIVITY TIP #2: GET UP EARLY

Also, don’t rule out the weekends.  I know a lot of us are busy on the weekends.  As a mommy, I am busier on the weekends than I am during the week.  Until your business is up and running and making a profit, I would forgo sleeping in late on the weekends.  Get up early just like you would during the week and use those free hours when the house is quiet to get some business work done.  The early bird gets the worm is just so true.  I find that if I get up early and put a few hours of work in, I can get a lot accomplished.  No one else is up to distract or interrupt me.

PRODUCTIVITY TIP #3: STAY UP LATE

Work when everyone else has gone to bed for the night.  When I was working on my dissertation, nights were the only time I could work for long periods of time uninterrupted.  And so that’s when I got most of my work done.  It was normal for me to be up until 2am or 3am while working on my doctorate.  Right after that, I had my twins.  And since I wasn’t sleeping much during their first year, I was still able to get some business work in.  Now, I’m not saying stay up until 3am daily or stay up all night because you need your rest.  But I am saying use your “night” time wisely and see if you can use down of that couch time for your business.

PRODUCTIVITY TIP #4: SET ONE GOAL DAILY

When you begin to work, have a plan or goal in mind.  I recommend having one task to complete each day.  There are several reasons for this because doing something like writing an email newsletter to your subscribers takes a lot longer to finish than you think.  So, allot your two-hour quote to complete it.  If you complete your task in less than two hours, great!  You can move on to the next task.  Better to feel accomplished and moving towards your business goals, rather than aimless or swamped with too much to do.

Goals: The One Thing You Must Do to Accomplish Them

goals: the one thing you must do to accomplish your goals this year

Don’t have time to read this post?  PIN IT for later!

January is the month that everyone is setting goals and making resolutions.   But excuse me.  I did not say, “Happy New Year!”  By now, I think everyone has gotten back to their normal routine.  Hopefully, you had a wonderful holiday season.  I did.  I have taken down all the Christmas decorations, my girls are back to school and I’m prepping for my Spring courses (I’m a professor, remember?)

I’m writing this because I, like you and so many others am looking at myself and figuring out what I want to do and be this year.  The New Year just naturally causes people to look back at the previous year and look ahead and plan for the new year.  Lots of people make resolutions to lose weight, start a business, quit smoking and all sorts of stuff.  Personally, I don’t make resolutions anymore because by January 17th – and most of the time, even sooner than that – I have given up and am back to eating ice cream daily and just resolve to accept the size of my thighs.  But this got me to thinking…  Why do I and so many others fail to accomplish their resolutions?  Why are goals so hard to achieve?

People come to me all the time wanting to me to help them achieve their dream of starting a blog for their business or grow their social media following.  They are so excited, serious and motivated when we first meet up.  But some people fall by the wayside, even before we get started or just when things are starting to take off.  Why is that?  Why are we like that?

The Reason We Fail to Reach Our Goals

I believe it is because we do not take action.  And if we do take action, we stop and do not repeat those actions that lead to progress over and over again until we reach our goal.  After all, it is so easy and comfortable to just keep doing what we are already going.  To get 100,000 or more Instagram followers and be considered a major influence, just doesn’t happen.  To get to the point where brands are paying you big bucks to post a picture of their product on your Instagram feed takes work.  A lot of work.  That just doesn’t happen overnight.  Even to get 1,000 like on your Facebook page takes determination, consistency and hard work.

The #1 Thing You Need to Do to Achieve Your Goals

To reach those dreams and goals that God has planted in us takes time, work and action.  Specific actions on a daily basis that we do over and over again until we reach that goal.  And we can’t let “obstacles” stop us.  Like P. Diddy, Puff Daddy, Sean Combs (or whatever he is calling himself now) says in a lot of his songs, “Can’t stop, won’t stop”.  We must have that attitude in order to succeed.

Expect Difficulties

Actually, we shouldn’t be surprised when we hit roadblocks. We should expect them but not let them deter us from our path.  We should have the mindset that we are going to go around, though, over or under that obstacle to overcome it.  The key is to not to quit or let that obstacle stop you from achieving your goal.  This year, we got this.  Let’s do this!  #achieveyourdreamsin2017
