income report April 2017

This is the very first time I am doing an income report.  However, I did not earn a penny so can I really call this an income report?  Well, I’m gonna call this a pre-income report because I was not setting out to specifically earn money this month.  And I will tell you why in a second.  But the purpose of this blog post is to tell you why I didn’t earn any income and to learn from my mistakes so you can earn income on your blog every, single month.

Truth moment here!  I have been blogging for several years and have made LOTS of money.  However, I have not been able to bring in consistent, monthly income via my blog.  I’ve seen those bloggers – and you’ve seen them too – who are showing how they made hundreds or thousands of dollars each month on their income report.  Some bloggers make 5 and 6 figures a month blogging.  Wow, that is awesome!  I have yet to reach those levels of steady, monthly blog income but I hopefully I will in the future.  I am working hard to make that a reality.

How I Made Money in the Past

I have an email list of about 500 people and from time to time, I hold webinars where I teach about social media and blogging.  If attendees want to work with me one-on-one or learn more, I sell coaching and online courses at the end of the webinar.  So if I gave a webinar, I would make money.  If I didn’t have a webinar, I did not make money.  So I made money when I had webinars, but that’s it.

I do have (wonderful!) job.  I am a Information Systems professor and I teach graduate students online.  I am also a wife and mommy of three lovely little girls (including a set of twins!). All that means is that I am busy just like any other mommy out there.  However, my goal is to bring in consistent, monthly income via my blog.  Therefore, I took a hard look at my blog and realized that I had to make some changes.  I realized that I was not treating my blog as a job.  So I was not getting the results from my blog (more traffic, income and email sign ups) that I wanted.  I blogged when I felt like it and didn’t have any kind of schedule or goals.  I worked on my blog when I had the time or when I felt like it.  As a result, I was making money off my blog sporadically.

A Change is Gonna Come…

I knew I needed to make some changes to my blog in order to bring in consistent cash, but I wasn’t clear on where to start.  But somehow or another, I stumbled across Pinterest.  Well, I always peruse Pinterest but I came across bloggers using Pinterest as a way to make money and bring massive amounts of traffic to their blog.  I was intrigued.  And after doing a few days of online research about Pinterest and how it can boost a blogger’s business, I decided to give it a try.

But there were a few issues I had to deal with first.  I really didn’t know how to use Pinterest for business.  I had to figure out pinning, boards, repins and all that sort of stuff.  And that took me a minute.  I actually purchased an online training course I came across called Pinterest Traffic Avalanche.  This Pinterest course is AMAZING and if you want to learn more about it click here.  So for most of the month of April, I was learning how to run a business using Pinterest.

Immediately, I converted my PInterest account from a personal to a business account.  Then I began to update my pins and boards to make them attractive and repinnable to others.  It’s a work in progress, but I am getting there.

Then I realized that my blog was just not setup to bring in traffic and customers.  Honestly, I was not getting any traffic my blog.  My email subscribers would read my blog post when I sent out my weekly email newsletter, but that was it.  I knew that Pinterest could help me with that in a big way.  I began to update the contents of my blog posts, turn my pins into rich pins and create pinnable Pinterest images.  As a result, I am already seeing huge amounts of traffic coming to my blog.  Again, if you want to learn more about how to use Pinterest to grow your business, go here to learn about the Pinterest Traffic Avalanche course.

The Reason I Made $0 Blogging Last Month

So, the real reason why I have not  made any money blogging last month is because I have been revamping my blog.  But that brings me to another topic.  I could have been making money last month if I had passive income on my blog.  But, I did not.  Currently, I am researching affiliate programs that align with my business that I can join.  I will update you in my future income reports about any affiliate income.

So here are the deets on my expenses and income….

3 Reasons Why I Didn’t Earn Any Income April 2017

Here are the takeaways of this blog post and mistakes you need to avoid

  1. I didn’t focus on making money.  I was focusing on revamping my blog instead of trying to help people.  Even though I have ebooks and email courses available for sale, I did not promote them.  Also, I didn’t give any webinars which bring in money.  If you want to make money, you have to promote it.  You can’t be skittish about it.  Just because you have products and services for sale on your website, doesn’t mean people will buy it.  You have to let your email subscribers know about your products and services.  And you have to promote it online and via social media.  The whole “if you build it they will come” mentally doesn’t work online.  You have to build it.  Then you have to bring people to it.
  2. I was not focused on getting traffic to my blog
  3. I had no passive income on my blog
