Have you ever flipped through a magazine at the grocery check-out and seen articles about how that magazine helped a group of women lose weight fast?  Ever wonder how those women got hooked up with that magazine to get the free personal training and support to lose weight?  Well, I had the opportunity to do that.  A few years ago, I was part of a weight loss challenge run by Redbook magazine.  It was an awesome experience.  I lost weight during the challenge and I still follow the workouts and meal plans I learned to keep the weight off.  Keep reading to learn more about my experience with Redbook.  And I’m gonna show you how you can get your hands on all the workouts, meal plans, tips and tricks the celeb trainers and nutritionists taught me to lose weight fast.

When I first learned about this Redbook weight loss challenge, my twins were 2 years old and my oldest child was 5.  I didn’t have time to work out every day or think about what I was eating.  I was just trying to get enough rest each day.  Even though my twins were sleeping through the night, I was still exhausted from the sheer amount of work I had to do every day.  When nighttime came, all I wanted to do was plop down on the couch in front of the television, get a snack and drink alcohol.  And that’s exactly what I did every single night.  But as a result, I was over 200 lbs and couldn’t fit into my jeans or any of my old clothes. I had lost all my baby weight after having my first child.  But I had no idea when or how I would be able to lose my baby weight from having my twins.  I just had the mindset that I could never be skinny again and I’d be a thick girl for the rest of my life.  I was slowly, in my mind, just accepting the weight.

Then one day by chance, I came across a study that was looking for people who wanted to lose weight so they can fit back into their wedding dress.  The people sponsoring the study were not revealed but I was instantly interested.  I definitely wanted to lose weight fast but I wanted to do it in a safe manner.  And I didn’t think I could ever fit back into my wedding dress.  When I got married I was 150 pounds.  I was my thinnest and fittest self when I walked down the aisle.  I was a workout queen and only “good” carbs rarely passed through my lips.  But now, I was a far cry from the girl who wore that wedding dress years ago.

I sent an email to the group conducting the study and they responded quickly by asking me to sent them photos of my in my wedding dress (at my wedding) and what I looked like now.  They also wanted me to tell them why I wanted to lose the weight and how I gained the weight.  They wanted to know if I wanted to lose weight fast or if I wanted to make a healthy lifestyle change.  I sent them back my pictures and story and guess what?  I made it into the program.  And to my complete surprise, I found out that Redbook magazine was sponsoring this program.  It was called the Wedding Dress Challenge and it was helping women who can’t fit into their wedding dresses anymore because of weight gain due to pregnancies, age, and inactivity lose weight.

I was given all the help and support I needed to succeed in the Wedding Dress Challenge.  Redbook provided me with a gym membership, a fitness trainer that worked with celebs like Jessica Alba and Halle Berry and a nutritionist to help me through the process.  Plus, I got sent free swag like a pedometer to use during my workouts.  I was excited to be working with Redbook magazine but I was more excited to have support and coaching through a weight loss program.  I had everything at my disposal that I needed to lose the weight.  I just had to do the work and that was the hard part.

During the challenge, I participated in glamorous photo shoots in New York City to document my “before” and “after” body.  It was a great way to mark the beginning and end of the program.  The photo shoots were like a celebration.  I got to meet the other participants – 12 women and one man – and the staff at Redbook magazine.  The stylists, hairdressers and makeup artists at the shoots were amazing.  I found out that one of the hairdressers went to high school with me (small world) and my makeup artists had just done the Victoria’s Secret show.    Everyone was so cool!  It was an amazing opportunity to be a part of.

Check out the video I took of the shoot.  Now, you know I’m not a fashion model.  When I was younger, I dreamed of becoming a fashion model.  I did a short stint as a model for Wilhelmina in New York City, but I never did anything major.  I’ve done lots of fashion shows but never anything for a major magazine.  I decided not to pursue modeling because I felt it wasn’t for me.  But it’s funny how life can come full circle.   When I was trying to model, I couldn’t get in a major magazine if my life depended on it.  Now, that I’ve moved on to other things, an opportunity to appear in a magazine just falls into my lap.  It’s funny how life works.  I am a blogger and professor.  But sometimes I get asked to do some really cool things.  Thanks Redbook magazine for asking me to participate in their Wedding Dress Fitness Challenge.  Here’s how I spent the day on the before shoot…..

After all that hard work and dieting to lose weight, we had celebration in New York City.  All of the participants gathered with the editors of Redbook magazine to celebrate our success and losses – weight loss that is!  It was great to hear everyone’s stories about how they were able to lose weight fast by eating clean and working out.  Redbook documented that day by getting pics of all of us in our wedding dresses.   You know, the ones we couldn’t fit into a few months ago.   Check out the video below of that magical day.

I am so thankful to Redbook magazine for allowing me to participate in this program because I really don’t think I would have lost the baby weight without them.  When I began working with Redbook magazine, my goal was to lose 20 pounds and fit back into my wedding dress.  I did this program over Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s which was great because I lost instead of gained weight during the holidays.   I lost a total of 18 lbs and dropped 2 dress sizes.  I was able to get back into my wedding dress and a lot of other clothes that I had not been able to wear for a long time.  I had no idea that I would lose weight fast.  I was surprised it came off so quickly.  I would gladly work with Redbook magazine again.  It was a wonderful experience.

1. Drink water – lots of it

So, there is nothing sexy about this. All I drink is water.  To be honest, I’m one of those girls who likes to order fruit smoothies with dinner and drink a tall glass of apple juice with my breakfast. But while dieting, I realized that I was drinking lots of my calories. And trust me, I’d rather apply my calories to something more filling and fun like yogurt, granola or a chocolate rice cake. So I had to cut out the fun drinks. But, guess what?  When I drink water, I lose weight. If I eat right, exercise but don’t drink lots of water, the weight comes off much slower.  So that should be motivation enough as to why you should get your drink on.  I always drink my

Here is my fav water bottle…  MIRA Stainless Steel, Vacuum Insulated, Wide Mouth Water Bottle – I tend to only buy (BPA-free) stainless steel water bottles that can hold at least 40 oz or more.  I know there are lots of water bottles that come in smaller sizes.  But if I use a 40 oz water bottle, I only have to fill it up 3 times to get my gallon of water in for the day.  In general, stainless steel water bottles are more expensive than their plastic and glass counterparts, but they are worth every penny.

2. Make healthy food swaps

If you LOVE ice cream – My substitute for ice cream is Fage 2% yogurt with honey.  I do not feel deprived eating my Fage yogurt with honey for dessert.  As a matter of fact, my husband started eating it and now loves it because he saw me eating it so much.  At first, when the kids went to bed, we’d meet on the couch to eat our snacks, watch TV and unwind.  He’d yell from the kitchen, “You want some ice cream?”.  I’d say, “No, I’m eating my yogurt (or chocolate rice cakes or yogurt smoothie)”.  “Your taste buds have changed”, he’d scream back from the kitchen.  And they had.  And I was happy about that.  Now, don’t get me wrong.  I still eat ice cream and cupcakes on occasion.  But I know that I can’t eat them every day like I used to.  I normally splurge on a dessert, like a cupcake during the weekend.

If you LOVE chips and dip – Another one of my favorite substitute snacks is Sabra Hummus Singles (in Classic or Red Roaster Pepper Flavor) with Snack Factory Pretzel Crisps.  So delicious…

If you LOVE fried food – Just because you’re watching what you eat doesn’t mean you have to give up fried foods.  Well, yes you do but you can have fake fried food.  How?  By cooking your food with a T-Fal ActiFry Air Fryer.  I make “fried” chicken, french fries, and whatever else I need to “fry” in my air fryer.  I cook with it every night and I have more than one.  I love my air fryer so much that I travel with mine.  That’s right, when I go on vacation with my family, we usually rent a house to stay in.  I’ll FedEx my air fryer to the vacation rental so I can use it to cook during our vacation.  Yes, that is how much I love my air fryer.

3. Get some really good Cookbooks

Every few months or so, I buy a new cookbook so I can learn how to make new, healthy dishes for my meals.  One of my favorite cookbooks of all time is “Now Eat This!: 150 of America’s Favorite Comfort Foods, All Under 350 Calories” by Rocco Dispirito.   The veggie lasagna and brownie recipes are yummy staples in my house.
