What To Blog About? How to Decide in 3 Easy Steps

What to Blog About - Decide in 3 Easy Steps

You know what question I get asked the most – what should I blog about?  And you know what I answer?  I usually say, “I don’t know.  What do YOU want to blog about?”  I can’t tell a person what to blog about.  As a mommy blogger, you must decide what you are going to blog about.  I believe this is the most important thing you need to decide as a blogger.  It will also have a huge impact your blog experience.  So, if you are unsure and don’t know how to decide on a blog topic, here are 3 simple steps to help you figure out what to blog about.

But let’s not put the cart before the horse.  Before we can begin blogging, we have to get a blog.  Do you have a blog?  Is it set up?  If not, great!  Let me help you get started.  i am here for you and that’s the purpose of this blog – to help mommy bloggers.  As a result, I have written a tutorial that gives step-by-step instructions on how to start a blog in 5 minutes.  Click HERE to get started.  I am excited for you.  Let’s do this together.  Okay, now let’s get back to what to blog about.

Step 1 – Get a Topic

Let me ask you a question?  What topic will you focus on writing about?  I suggest blogging about ONE thing.  I understand that everyone has various interests, passions and hobbies.  But your blog should be focused and concise on one topic.  It’s okay to have several blogs.  Lots of people do this.  What you don’t want to have is a blog that is talking about a lot of topics, confusing and all over the place.  So what I want you to do is think about what you ultimately want to do or what you want to use blogging for.

Step 2 – Find Your Niche

What is a niche?  The definition of niche is “a distinct segment in the market”. Notice the word distinct in the definition.  So, take a market, field, interest, passion or hobby you have and find a distinct segment of it.  That’s a niche.  Let’s take cars for example.  If you want to blog about cars, that’s great.  But the topic of cars is very broad.  It would be wise to decide what segment of cars to blog about.  You could blog about Ford Mustangs or futuristic concept cars.  Or you could blog about electric cars or car crash testing and safety issues.  Do you see where I am going?  For your blog, you need to focus narrowly on that one topic and use blogging to become an expert or leader in that topic.

Step 3 – Set a Goal

Let’s just take a minute and think about your goals.  I’m going to make some assumptions that since you are reading this blog post, you want to use blogging to establish your blog and business.  Therefore, you need to be focused on one, specific topic.  You want to have a well-read blog or become an authority on a certain topic or in a particular industry.  In order to do this, you must stay on topic – one topic.

What to Blog About: A Case Study

I’m going to use one of my previous workshop attendees as an example.  Ted (not his real name) worked at a local news station covering sports in the Philadelphia area.  He had dreams of becoming a sports commentator working the sidelines of professional games for national news or sports cable channels.  He also wanted to give commentary on pre-game shows.  Ted wanted to start a blog to take his local sports broadcast career to a national level.  He wanted my advice on how to improve his blog and how blogging could help raise his profile.  When I took a look at his blog, he was blogging about everything – local sports, professional sports, high school athletes, college games and more.  It was also taking a toll on him because Ted felt he had to give his opinion on every big sports story that came out so he appeared to be abreast and current on all the latest sports stories.  I advised him to blog about one specific sport on one specific level.  I told him, if you are most passionate about college football, then blog about that.  If major league baseball was his thing, then that’s what he should focus on.  As it turns out, he loves professional football.  So I told him to blog only about that.

Ted contacted me several months after the workshop and told me that blogging has become a joy.  No longer was he spending hours blogging about every sports story.   Now, he focused on the one thing he was passionate about – professional football.  As a result, Ted’s readership increased dramatically and he is well on his way to becoming a sought after, respected NFL sports blogger.

Final Thoughts

If I can take you back to my graduate education, here is what you do to get a doctorate – you focus broadly on one narrow topic.  Does that make sense?   To put it differently, when I was writing my dissertation, I was basically writing a lot about one, small aspect of a research topic.  That’s what you want to do in your blog.  Take one topic and only focus on that.  That way, your readers will know exactly what your blog is about and you will know exactly the one thing that your blog is about.

If you are reading this and your blog is not up yet, no worries.  Lucky for you, I have written this tutorial about starting a blog.  It will show you how to get your own blog set up in just 5 minutes!  That’s right, just 5 minutes!  Click HERE to get started.  There is no need to be scared or intimidated about this.  I am here to help you and walk you through the process step by step.

What is Your Blog About?

So, in the comments section, let me know some things.  Have you figured out what to blog about?  What is your blog topic or niche?  Why do you want to blog?  What is the niche you blog about?  What is the goal your blog could help you achieve?  Lemme know…

Does This Sound Like YOU?

After weeks and months of going back and forth, you finally made the decision to start a blog.  You are pumped!  You’ve picked a topic that you love to blog about.  And you think that you can squeeze in an hour to work on your blog each day while your oldest child is in kindergarten and your youngest child is napping.  You’re excited.  But then out of nowhere, it hits you.  The feelings of intimidation, fear and overwhelm.  “Oh, no!  I have to setup a blog!!!”  You’re screaming inside your head.  You’re beginning to feel anxious because you’re worried that the instructions will be confusing and full of technical mumbo-jumbo.  You think you’ll have to spend hours and hours trying to setup your blog with no success.  And in the end, you fear that you’ll end up frustrated, thinking this whole “bloggy setup thing” was a complete and utter waste of time.  Is this what you are thinking?

But, wait…  What if I told you that it’s really easy to setup a blog and you could do it in 6 simple steps?  Better yet, what if I told you that I could hold your hand through the process and it will only take about 20 minutes of your time?  Feeling better about things?  Let me give you step-by-step instructions on how to setup a blog.  I will not use any technical jargon and promise to explain everything in simple words that everyone can understand.  Because if you don’t know, lemme tell you a little about me.  I am an online Information Systems professor.  For the past 7 years, I’ve taught students online and have been trained to breakdown technical topics and make them simple to understand.  So, with my experience and your passion, we can get this blog setup.  And in all reality, you really don’t need me. When you go through the steps to setup your blog and see how simple it is, you’ll be calling all your girlfriends to tell them about it.  Because you see, you’ve already done the hard work.  The hardest thing was making the decision to start a blog.  Everything else will fall into place.  And with that, I will ask if you are ready to start your blog today?  If so, cool!  Let’s get started!

Web Hosting Service: What is it?

To set up a blog, you will need to get web hosting service.  But just in case you’re not sure exactly what a web host is, let me explain it to you.  A web host gives you space on the internet to “house” your blog.  Let me give you an example.  There are millions of town homes, houses, apartments, condos, etc. in every city.  But each living space has its own unique location or address.  The domain name is the address or location of that living space that identifies it from all the others.  Your blog is stored in the living space online.  But you need to find a web host to rent that living space online that houses your blog.  The web host is the landlord who rents out a certain amount of space on the internet for your blog to live.  To sum it all up, the web host makes space available to house your blog on the internet and leases or rents that space to you.

Your web host rents out the space to you.  You cannot permanently own this space on the internet.  Your job is to find a web host that offers rates you find affordable.  Normally, you buy this service on an annual basis.  The longer you pay up front for web space, the cheaper the rate will be.  I recommend that you use Blue Host.  The service is affordable and the customer service is amazing.

I could go on and on.  But this is all about you and getting your blog set up.  You ready?   Okay, let’s do it!

To get started with Blue Host, visit marcellawilson.com/bluehost.

Step 1: Select Your Plan

Blue Host offers crazy cheap prices on its superior web hosting service.  There are 3 affordably priced plans.  Since you get a 30-Day money back guarantee, I suggest taking the plan that makes the least impact on your wallet.  I recommend the $3.95 per month plan.  So, you really have got nothing to lose since you can get your money back.  Go ahead and sign up today.

Right now, you’re just checking out the plans Blue Host offers.  In a few steps, you’ll actually sign up for your specific plan.

Step 2: Setup Your Free Domain Name

Every blog needs a unique domain name.  Not sure what a domain name is?  A domain name is a unique web address on the internet.  For example, my domain name or web address is www.marcellawilson.com.  It is unique because no two people can have the same domain name.  When you type in marcellawilson.com on the Internet, it takes you to my blog.  A domain name is like the address of your blog.  Essentially, a domain name is the location of a web site.

Now, let’s be clear about one thing.  You do not own your domain name.  It does not belong to you.  You can pay a fee to use your selected domain name for several months or up to several years.  But in all actuality, a domain name is rented.  Your domain name is yours for as long as your payments are current.  If you let your domain name expire or don’t keep up the payments, your domain name can be resold to another party.  The longer you pay up front to use the domain name, the bigger the discount usually is.

If you don’t have any ideas for your domain name, I recommend you pick something from the 4 most popular types of domain names for a business.

  1. What you do (Ex: makeyourbodywork.com)
  2. The name of your business (Ex: fracturedprune.com)
  3. Your first and last name (Ex: marcellawilson.com)
  4. The target audience of your business. (Ex: happyblackwoman.com)

IF YOU ALREADY HAVE A DOMAIN NAME

You may already have a domain name that you bought through Go Daddy or another registration service.  However, in order for you to sign up for this service, you must transfer your domain name to Blue Host.  This is a common issue and Blue Host has created a tutorial video showing the steps you need to take to transfer your current domain name to Blue Host.  Click HERE to learn how to transfer your domain to Blue Host.

Step 3: Create Your Account

Now it’s time to set up your Blue Host account.  You have 2 options here.  You can use your Google account to sign up for Blue Host.  Or you can enter your personal information to setup your Blue Host account.  Personally, I recommend setting up a Blue Host account and not use your Google login.  The reason?  Call me crazy, but if your Google login gets hacked or compromised in any way, those criminals have access to your Google and Blue Host accounts.  Your Blue Host account houses your blog which is your business and you need to protect that at all costs.   So, please, create a separate account for Blue Host.

Blue Host needs your full name, address, phone number and email address.  Please don’t use any abbreviations or purposefully put in any incorrect information.  Again, your blog is your business so make sure this information is accurate.

Step 4: Pick Your Package

This is where you tell Blue Host the plan you want.  Again, I recommend the $3.95/ month plan.  It is the most cost effective.  However, I want you to notice that you will be billed for 3 years upfront.  Don’t let this put you off.  I know when bloggers are just starting out, they usually want to sign up for a year to see how things pan out.  But trust me, if you are reading this, then you are in it for the long haul.  And honestly, it may take your blog a year just to become profitable.  When that year is up, you’ll have to reup and pay for more web hosting service.  Your new rates for web hosting will undoubtedly be more expensive than $3.95 a month.  The more years you buy upfront, the cheaper the cost for the service will be.  So, sign up for the $3.95 plan .

If you are wondering what Domain Privacy Protection, Site Backup Pro and Sitelock Security are, check out my blog post “Blogging 101: What is a Blog, Bloggers and Blogging?” where I explain what they are in detail.  Whether you chose to add one or more of these services to you plan is totally up to you.

Step 5: Make Your Investment

Yes, now is the time to make an investment in your business.  It’s a small price to pay to bring your dreams and goals into fruition.  Hopefully, you to see it that way.  So, enter your credit card information to pay for your web hosting service.  Be sure to read the fine print in the blue box.  Basically, it says that when the 3 years they you paid for are up, automatically your credit card will be charged and your service renewed.  You will get an email when it’s time for you to renew your service but just be aware of this.

Next, check that you have read Blue Host’s terms of service, cancellation and privacy policies.  Then, click the blue submit button.  And presto!  Your Blue Host account is all set up.

Step 6: Install WordPress

When you get your web hosting service via Blue Host, you have to complete one more step in order to start blogging.  You must install blogging software on your blog in order for it to work properly.  I recommend using WordPress for your blogging software.  It is the preferred blogging software of most bloggers.  And installing WordPress on Blue Host is as simple as clicking a button because that’s all you have to do.  Click the “Install WordPress” button on WordPress and you’re done.

Next Steps!

Congrats on starting blog.  Now, I’m not gonna leave you hanging.  You still need to do a few more things before your blog is ready to be presented to the world.

  1. Learn about WordPress.  If you have never used WordPress before or you need help with a specific WordPress issue, visit “WordPress Tutorials for Beginners“.  It’s a site full of WordPress tutorials specifically for beginners.  And it’s important to know where to run to if you need help or get stuck on a WordPress problem.
  2. Get a WordPress Theme.  A theme is the design of your blog.  Now, WordPress has some built-in themes that you can use and you can also get free WordPress themes on the Internet.  However, I have tried both and firmly believe that you get what you pay for.  I recommend Elegant Themes by Divi for your blog.  I use it on this blog and it is a game changer.  You can customize it to your blog and create any kind of configuration, layout or design that you want.
  3. Sign up for an email subscription service. Collecting email addresses is so important and having a large, engaged email list is the true sign of a profitable business.  You need to start collecting email addresses on day one that your blog is up.  As the popular saying goes, “The money is on the list!”  I wish I had done this.  There are lots of email subscription services out there.  But I have used aweber since I started blogging and highly recommend it for you.  Click HERE to learn more about aweber.
  4. Write your first blog post!  Once you pick your WordPress theme and sign-up for an email subscription service, start blogging!  I have created a tutorial that walks you through how to write your very first blog post using WordPress.  It’s easier than you think and it will only take you about 20 minutes to learn.  As I’ve said before, I believe that a blog post is the best way to create a customer and make a sale.  So, check out my tutorial and let’s get started writing the first of many amazing blog posts.
  5. Promote affiliate products on your blog.  I don’t want you even thinking about making money off your blog until you’ve got about 15-20 blog posts published.  But since I get asked about it so much, here is a great way to make money blogging.  Some bloggers make money selling affiliate products.  If you don’t know what affiliate products are, that’s when you sell another company’s product to your audience and you get a cut of the sale.  Lots of bloggers sell affiliate products or become affiliates for a company because it’s no work on their part.  All they have to do is blog about other people’s products and cash their checks when someone buys it.  Some bloggers make their entire living selling affiliate products.  One popular financial blogger, Michelle Schroeder-Gardner, makes over $50,000 each month in affiliate income.  Yes, you read that correctly.   Michelle has been blogging for years and her affiliate income has increased over time.  So, making five figures a month in affiliate income may not be realistic for you to achieve right now.   However, many bloggers start out earning $60 or $70 of affiliate income a month and then grow from there.   If you want to learn exactly how Michelle earns $50,000 a month in affiliate income, check out her online course “Making Sense of Affiliate Marketing“.

Blog More: 5 Ways Watching TV can Help

productivity blogging tips

No time to read this post about finding more time to blog?  PIN IT for later!

In last week’s post, I gave 4 tips on how we, as mommy bloggers with busy schedules, can find more time to blog, be productive and work on our business.  A few of you got back to me and said that watching a lot of television cuts into their time to work on their blog and business.   I completely understand the lure of the television and the power it has over us.  Some of my clients really struggle with it.  It has all the shows and movies you want to see at the click of a button.  And with television, FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) is real and there is so much good stuff on every day.  What’s a girl to do?

Now, I rarely turn on the TV during the day, but that was not always the case.  When I was writing my dissertation, I just could not turn off the television.  It was my escape from all the hard work I was doing.

Bad thing was that I was spending so much time watching “The Young and the Restless” and reality TV that I was barely getting any work done on my dissertation.  So much so that my research advisor voiced his concern to me about my lack of progress.  That was a turning point for me and I knew I had to get help or this whole PhD thing wouldn’t turn out so well.

So I enlisted the help of a mentor to get me back on track.  With the help of my mentor, I was able to rein in my TV watching and finish my dissertation.  Yay!  But what I learned about being productive and still watching television applies to anyone trying to complete tasks, get work done or reach goals.  And now, I want to pass those tips on to you so you can use them to be more prolific and profitable on your blog or business.

But before I pass on those tips, do you have a blog yet?  If not, don’t despair.  I am here to help you though the whole process.  In just 5 minutes you can get your blog up and running.  Check out this blog post where I give step-by-step tutorial on how to start a blog.  The instructions are clear and easy to follow.  So get started on your dream today by clicking HERE to start your blog.

Dr. Marcella Wilson gives blog tips to female entreprenuers

About to watch a really good show on Netflix called “Marcella”. Great name for a show, by the way!

Need to blog and work on your business but can’t turn off the TV, here’s a few tips:

PRODUCTIVITY TIP #1: TiVo it!

The greatest invention after the television is TiVo.  If you have to work on your business, TiVo what you really want to see or don’t want to miss on television.  Buy it.  It is worth the investment.

PRODUCTIVITY TIP #2: Be Patient

If you forgot to TiVo it, it will probably come on again.

PRODUCTIVITY TIP #3: Get Netflix, Hulu or Amazon Prime

Or purchase some other streaming service that lets you watch television on demand. So when you have a free hour, watch the show you really want to on demand.

PRODUCTIVITY TIP #4: Watch Your Favorite Shows While You Work Out

I do this religiously.  When I’m doing my cardio, I’m not listening to music.  No way!  I’m watching Netflix.  Depending on how long you work out, t’s a great way to get in anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour of  (guilt-free!) TV watching.

PRODUCTIVITY TIP #5: Work During Commercial Breaks

Here’s a trick I used in graduate school when I really wanted to watch something but had a ton of work to do. Watch it live when it comes on but work only during the commercial breaks.  Or watch it on TiVo but don’t fast forward through the commercial breaks.  This only works for shows and movies that have commercials.  Honestly, I probably write most of my blog posts during commercial breaks.  Try it.  You will be amazed at how much work you get done.

What are some tips that you use to keep your TV watching time in check?  Do you struggle with watching too much television?  Is it affecting your work time?  If so let me know in the comments.  Also, let me know your tips and tricks on how to be more effective at getting work done during the day.

3 Reasons Why You Should Start a Mom Blog

Don’t have time to read this post about starting a mom blog?  PIN IT for later!  ** this page contains affiliate links

Never in a million years did I think I would be a stay-at-home mom of three amazing girls or run a mom blog.  But here I am doing both and I love it!  I wouldn’t trade my life for the world!  We all know how one becomes a mom (ha ha ha) , but let me share with you my journey of starting a mom blog.  And I’ll also show why YOU should become a mommy blogger.

After finishing up my doctorate (which was a grueling process) and having my first child, my hubby and I wanted to have another baby.  We didn’t see the point in me getting a full-time job. Plus, I wasn’t ready to put my baby in daycare all day.  As fate would have it, I did get pregnant again, with not one but two babies! Yes, we were having twins. Fortunately, I got offered a job teaching graduate courses online. I was ecstatic. I could work and stay at home taking care of my children.  But as I get into more about my personal experience starting a mom blog, I will also give you 3 reasons why you should start a mom blog too.

Start a Mom Blog

1. To Stay Current in Your Field, Niche or Industry

My online teaching job was great but it wasn’t full-time. The tenured professors at my university were the only ones that received a full-time salary. I only taught one or two classes a semester. I was worried because I knew that eventually I would go back to work full time. My goal was always to become a computer science professor. However, professor jobs are really hard to come by mainly because there are a limited number of professors in each department. In addition, if a professor is granted tenure he or she can stay at that university until they retire. So you can imagine that the competition for professor jobs is fierce. Moreover, offers for tenured professor jobs normally go to those individuals that are making a big impact in their area of research. Eventually, I wanted a job as a professor but honestly didn’t know if it could become a reality.  At that time, I didn’t realize how blogging could benefit me.  But I was about to find out.

Since I was home with my children, I felt that there wasn’t much I could do to stay current in the field of technology. I felt out of the loop because I wasn’t working day in and day out in my industry. Now, don’t get me wrong, I was happy and blessed to stay at home with my babies. I was also fortunate to be able to work out of my house. However, I knew that once I started job-hunting, my resume would not be as strong as someone who worked full-time at a tech company or a university. I needed a way to stay current. I needed an edge. Then one day it came to me.

One day, I was watching an entertainment show and they were talking about fashion week in New York City.  During fashion week, the media is always focused on the celebs sitting in front rows of fashion shows.  But this show focused on how fashion bloggers were sitting front row at all the shows and how their blogs were impacting the fashion industry. Right then and there, a light bulb went off in my head. These fashion blogs were started by people who love and have an interest in fashion. But for some reason or another, they were not able to land a coveted job in fashion. Therefore, they started blogging about fashion to give their opinion on new trends, up and coming fashion models and industry gossip. Many of these fashion bloggers gained huge followings and became experts in the fashion industry. Overnight, fashion bloggers had become the hottest fashion stars.

Right then and there, I decided that I too would use blogging as a way to stay current in my industry.  And the very next day, this blog, marcellawilson.com was born.  But more importantly, I wanted to use blogging as a way to stay current in the technology industry.  Even though I was changing diapers and making bottles during most of the day, I needed a way to stay viable in my industry.  And in the ever-changing job market, it’s important to stay marketable.  As a result, I set out to learn more about how blogging could keep me viable in my industry.

2. Earn Income

But I began to notice something else about these bloggers.  I began to notice that bloggers were getting work. Like real paid jobs. I was really interested then.  I began to look around and saw that bloggers in all types of fields, niches and industries were everywhere!  When I read a magazine, bloggers were writing the editorials. I saw bloggers in commercials and advertisements promoting brands. I turned on my favorite news and talk shows only to see them discussing the seasons latest news and trends. I also saw them as judges on reality competition shows. I was like, what! All this from blogging? I thought to myself, how can I be down with this!?!

Because let’s be honest, it’s expensive raising kids, right?  Formula, pull-ups, gymnastics and shoes ain’t cheap.  Can I get a witness?  The harsh reality was that my household was going from 2 full-time incomes to 1 full-time income and some change.  My husband was not worried but that was kinda scary to me.  So, I really wanted to get this blogging stuff down so I could contribute to the household income.  Is that your reason for starting a mom blog?

Now, of course, I had an advantage because my educational background is in computer science and my graduate research focused on online social networks. Thus, I was familiar with the technical aspect of blogging. However, my education did not focus on blogging as a way to build income or grow a business.  I had no idea how to do that.  So, I set out to learn more about how blogging could build a business and increase my income.   As a result, I spend about two years studying online marketing and business.  I was really trying to figure out how to build an online business and make money online.  Now, I didn’t plan on spending two years learning all of this.  I was hoping to start blogging and in a month or so, watch the money pour in.  But it just doesn’t happen that way. These past few years have been filled with lots of trial and error, with ups and downs about blogging and business.  But I learned a lot, didn’t give up and am ready to share my knowledge with you.

3. Every Business Needs a Blog

You might be thinking, “Well I’ll just start a regular website.  I don’t really have to blog, do I?”  Yes, you do and here’s why.  There are 2 types of websites: dynamic and static web sites.  A static web site is one that rarely or never changes.  Google.com is a good example of a static web site.  It always looks the same, maybe with an image change above the search box, every day.  However, a dynamic web site changes or is updated on a regular basis.  A blog is a dynamic website.  A good example of this is The New York Post online site.  It is a blog and it’s dynamic because each day, the New York Post has new stories and images added to it.  So, you can either have a website that doesn’t change very often or one that changes all the time.

But you want to have a dynamic website – or a blog – because Google loves blogs.  Did you know that Google is the #2 most visited website on the Internet?  It’s pretty popular!  Lots of folks go to Google to find information and search.  So, Google’s job is to quickly find relevant data based on a search query.   Google knows that blogs usually have more up to date information than a regular, static website because they are updated more frequently (ie, every day, several times a day or once a week).  Therefore, Google is more likely to return a blog higher in search results than a regular website. Google ranks websites higher in their search results that are updated frequently.   And that’s why you want to have a blog for your business over a regular website.

Let’s assume that there are 2 businesses selling tennis balls online.  One business has a blog and the other business just has a regular web site.  If a customer is searching online, looking for tennis balls to buy, the business with the blog will get returned in the search results higher than the business without a blog.  That can result in more sales to the business that blogs.  And we know that people normally don’t go beyond the first page of search results.  So that business without a blog is losing money and customers to a company that blogs.  The takeaway here is you need to blog because it makes it easier for your customers to find you on Google.

But why are Google and blogs so important to your business?  And what does static and dynamic websites have to do with your business?  Ahhh, just read on…

The #1 Reason Why You Should Start a Mom Blog Today

If you don’t have a blog you’re already losing money.  Why? A study by the Pew Internet & American Life Project found that over 80% of Americans “look for information online first about a service or product they are thinking of buying.”   If you are not online, you cannot be found by these potential customers. Therefore, you are missing out on money that you could be making.   Go where your customers are. Since most people start looking for products and services online, then you need to be online.   And know that if you don’t have a blog, you are already losing customers and money since Google loves blogs and people go to Google to search for products and services to buy.

If you already sell products and services on your blog

Create a Gift List!  Since everyone is searching for the perfect Valentine gift, give your readers gift ideas featuring your products and services. Most people buy traditional Valentine’s Day gifts like candy but why not show them that your products and services can make their loved one happy too? They won’t know until you tell them, so show them and (hopefully) make the sale.

Package it Up!  You can even create special packages for the holiday that are only available for Valentine’s Day. Be clear about what products and/or services are being offered in the package and the pricing. If you can, offer several packages at different price points to attract a range of customers. If your products and services aren’t love-themed, try using red or pink packaging instead. I realize these ideas may take more than a week to implement, so be sure to give yourself enough time to give your products and services “the look of love”.

Gift Card, Anyone?  Another great option is to allow customers to buy your products and services as a gift to a loved one. This works for a wide range of products and services. And if all else fails, give your customers a coupon that can only be used on Valentine’s Day. The coupon code can be the word “LOVE” or another holiday-related term. If you have an email list, shoot them out a quick email Valentine’s Day morning letting them know about the special coupon code and see what happens. Hopefully, the sales will start rolling in.

Target Different audiences.  When we think of Valentine’s Day, we think of romantic love, right? And that’s what the holiday is all about. But other people in our life need love too. Show potential customers that your products and services will make great Valentine’s Day gifts for parents, children, co-workers, friends and even pets. Yes, people love their pets and treat them like family members, so why not?

If you are not at the point where you are selling products and services yet

No worries. I still have some ways you can use Valentine’s Day to pull in more readers to your blog.

If your blog has nothing to do with love or Valentine’s Day, you can still use the holiday to get more readers. For example, if you blog about vintage Ford Mustangs, you can write a blog post called “10 Reasons to Love the Ford Mustang” or “5 Rom-Com Movies that Feature Ford Mustangs”. Take some time over the next few days to think about what you want to write about and try to come up with some cool ways to incorporate Valentine’s Day into your blog.

As a side note, I bought a bright red Ford Mustang when I finished my master’s degree. I sold it when I had my first child because I couldn’t fit my stroller in the trunk of the car. As you can see, I have never quite gotten over that.

It’s Valentine’s Day, spread love on social media

If you plan ahead, here are some lovely things you can do on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

Dr. Marcella Wilson on Valentine's Day

Create love-themed posts on social media the week leading up to Valentine’s Day. Now be sure to mix it up. Use quotes, funny memes, pictures and even videos hyping up to Valentine’s Day. You can use your posts to advertise Valentine’s Day specials that you are offering or to just send readers to your blog.

Create a Hashtag that brings awareness to Valentine’s Day but also promotes your blog. You can use your hashtag on Twitter and Instagram. But just remember that hashtags are not owned by anyone and can be used by anyone. So it is possible that someone else can use the hashtag you’re using for Valentine’s Day for a something totally different.

Photo Contest – If you are not selling anything, use your hashtag as a photo contest. The way it works is that readers can post pictures on their Instagram or Twitter account using your Valentine-themed hashtag. But only the best photos or top 10 winners will get retweeted on your Instagram or Twitter account. And you’ll be surprised. If you use this method, I bet you’ll get a lot more participation than you anticipate. People don’t always need the promise of winning something to get involved. Just giving someone the opportunity to be recognized and promoted is more than enough motivation for some people. Try it out and see how it works for you.

In closing, use one of these ideas to get your readers in the “mood for love” by showcasing your products and services or reading your blog. The key is to be creative and think outside the box. I know you can come up with something special, thoughtful and fun that your readers will just love.

In the comments, tell me which idea you are going to use this Valentine’s Day on your blog. Or tell me about an idea that I haven’t talked about.  I can’t wait to hear from you!
