Hi! I am Dr. Marcella Wilson and I am the busy mom of three, amazing little girls – a 9-year old and 6 year old twins.
I teach Computer Science courses, run my web design business and teach other women how to build their business online via blogging and social media (so they can attract more clients) – all without ever leaving my home!
About 5 years ago, I graduated with my doctorate in Computer Science. When I graduated, I was jobless. I left a great job because I had several children back-to-back. My days were filled with doctor’s appointments, play dates and potty training. It was hard going from 2 full-time incomes to only one but I felt blessed to be home with my kids. However, I wanted to do things for my children that required money, like gymnastics, ballet class and private schooling. Even though I had all those letters behind my name, I didn’t know how I could bring in money for those extras and still stay at home with my children.
So I began blogging about technology. Much to my surprise, people started reading my blog. Pretty soon, I began appearing on television and in the media regularly discussing technology. You can see all the press I’ve done HERE.
Here are just a few of the wonderful opportunities I have experienced because of blogging:
The first thing I realized about working in the media was that I loved it. It was truly exciting – especially since it was combined with my passion, technology. But I was exhausted from all the traveling and just wanted to be home with my family. I also wasn’t making any money. Nope! Not one penny from all that media I was doing. But you know what? A funny thing happened. Because of my blog, people began contacting me to speak, consult for their business, and design web sites for them. Many of my stay-at-home mommy friends (and other people who wanted to work from home) began asking me about blogging as a way to work from home. However, many felt that they were not tech-savvy or knowledgeable enough to blog or set up an online business. For these reasons, I wrote this introductory book on blogging to help busy women who want to start a blog but don’t know how.
In this eBook, I teach you in easy to understand language how the Internet works. I call this “Tech Know”. I take you behind the scenes of the Internet and give you information that will allow you to harness its power. In turn, you can take that insider information, implement it into your blog and reap the results of more traffic, customers and cash for your business. If you know how the Internet works – really works – then you’ll have a leg up on the competition and be one step closer to making a sale. And that’s the goal, right?
You want to learn about blogging so you can get more clients for your business. But in reality, you’re a busy mom with lots of responsibilities. If you’re going to be successful with your blog and business, you have to be honest with yourself. Are you disciplined enough to work from home? Will you be a consistent blogger? If you’re like me, everyday you’ve got to find time to work out, vacuum, fold those bottomless baskets of laundry, cook, blog and build your business. In this section, we’ll take a look at what you should expect from living life as a mom and running a blog.
In this section, I talk about how much it costs you to run a blog. I delve into how much it costs to set-up a blog and review some free alternatives. I don’t know about you, but I’m a mom on a budget! I’ve got bills to pay and mouths to feed. I feel it is important to consider all my options before I agree to pay for a produict or service. So before you jump in and set up a blog, let’s calculate the numbers and see how much it’s gonna cost.
Yes, you do! Over 60% of small businesses don’t have a blog. If you’re one of those business owners who don’t have a blog, you’re already losing money. Why? The Pew Internet & American Life Project found that over 80% of Americans “look for information online first about a service or product they are thinking of buying.” And blogs typically rank higher on search engines like Google than web sites. So, if you don’t have a blog, you are less likely to be found by these potential clients and are ultimately losing money.
Why? The wonderful thing about blogging is it sets you up as an authoritative voice or expert on your topic. It does not matter what your background is, how much experience you have or your education. As you blog, you gain your reader’s trust and soon, they will begin asking to buy your products and services, consult, coach and speak for them.
